Who killed Obi Wan Kenobi?

In the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi is struck down by his former apprentice Darth Vader during a lightsaber duel on the Death Star. This shocking moment marked the death of one of the most beloved Jedi Masters in the Star Wars saga. But who exactly was responsible for Obi-Wan’s demise? While Darth Vader delivered the final, fatal blow, there were several factors and decisions that led to Obi-Wan’s tragic fate.

Why were Obi-Wan and Vader dueling in the first place?

Obi-Wan and Vader’s duel on the Death Star was the culmination of events that began decades earlier, when Obi-Wan first took Anakin Skywalker as his Jedi apprentice. After Anakin turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader, Obi-Wan took it upon himself to watch over Anakin’s son, Luke Skywalker, on Tatooine. Many years later, R2-D2 came into Luke’s possession carrying the stolen Death Star plans which Princess Leia had hidden inside him. After viewing Leia’s message, Luke and Obi-Wan traveled to Mos Eisley to find passage to Alderaan aboard the Millennium Falcon.

When they arrived, Alderaan had already been destroyed by the Death Star. Drawn into the space station by its tractor beam, Obi-Wan disabled the beam so the others could escape and then went to deactivate the detention block ray shield and rescue Princess Leia. That’s when fate reunited Obi-Wan and Vader for their final duel.

Vader’s Thirst for Revenge

After their fateful duel on Mustafar left Vader severely wounded and engulfed in flames, he harbored immense anger and hatred towards his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi for mutilating his body and leaving him for dead. Obi-Wan embodied the Jedi Order that Anakin felt had betrayed him, and defeating his former master was critical to Vader’s plans to destroy the Jedi.

When Vader sensed Obi-Wan’s presence on the Death Star, he became singularly focused on finding and killing the man who had caused him so much pain. Vader yearned for revenge against the person who left him physically and emotionally scarred. So while he did not directly set events in motion, Vader’s burning desire for retribution set him on a collision course with Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan’s Willing Self-Sacrifice

Obi-Wan knew that defeating Vader and escaping the Death Star were impossible tasks. But he realized that sacrificing himself could serve a greater purpose – allowing Luke and his companions to flee and fight another day. In an act of selfless courage, Obi-Wan confronted Vader, keeping his former apprentice’s attention fixed solely on him to buy time for the others.

When the moment came, Obi-Wan willingly lowered his lightsaber and allowed Vader to strike him down. By giving his life, Obi-Wan enabled Luke to escape and continue his Jedi training. In that way, Obi-Wan played a pivotal role in orchestrating the very confrontation that claimed his life. His willing self-sacrifice was instrumental to Vader striking the fatal blow.

The Will of the Force

While various decisions and factors set the stage for their duel, some may argue it was the will of the Force that destined Obi-Wan to die at Vader’s hand. As an enlightened Jedi Master, Obi-Wan knew that he had a role to play in guiding Luke forward on his hero’s journey. He recognized that his death could give Luke the motivation he needed to grow into the hero the galaxy needed.

By surrendering himself to his destiny and allowing the Force to guide his actions, Obi-Wan played his part in the fateful duel just as the Force willed it. His death was a necessary loss to help the light side ultimately prevail. In that sense, the cosmic Force orchestrated events for Obi-Wan’s destiny to culminate in a showdown and demise at Vader’s blade.

Emperor Palpatine’s Scheming

While less directly involved in Obi-Wan and Vader’s duel, Emperor Palpatine was certainly a puppet master behind the scenes. Palpatine knew that Obi-Wan’s death would deal Vader a demoralizing blow and strengthen his hatred. A Sith Master, Palpatine wanted to deepen Vader’s connection to the dark side.

By using the Death Star to eliminate Jedi and force a confrontation, Palpatine manipulated events knowing Vader would want revenge against Obi-Wan. The Emperor understood that Obi-Wan’s murder by Vader’s hand would more tightly ensnare his apprentice in darkness. In this way, Palpatine’s shrewd scheming was indirectly responsible for Obi-Wan’s death.

Conclusion

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s noble death at the hands of his fallen apprentice was a pivotal moment in the Star Wars saga, setting Luke on the path to becoming a Jedi and dealing a vicious blow to Vader. While Darth Vader physically struck down Obi-Wan, the full truth is more complex. Obi-Wan willingly sacrificed himself to enable Luke’s escape. Vader’s burning hatred and desire for revenge drove him to kill his former master. And unseen forces like destiny, the will of the Force, and Emperor Palpatine’s cunning schemes shaped events toward this fateful encounter. For these reasons, no single person or factor was solely responsible for Obi-Wan’s death. It was the culmination of various decisions and influences that led Vader to ultimately kill the wise Jedi Master known as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
