Who is Lily and Rufus child?

Lily van der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey are characters in the popular TV show Gossip Girl. They were high school sweethearts who rekindled their romance later in the show. Lily and Rufus had one biological child together named Scott Rosson.

Lily and Rufus’ Relationship History

Lily and Rufus first met when they both attended high school on the Upper East Side in the 1980s. They fell in love despite coming from very different backgrounds – Lily was born into high society while Rufus came from a bohemian, middle-class family.

Their parents disapproved of their relationship and they ended up going their separate ways after high school – Lily married up-and-coming businessman Bart Bass while Rufus married a groupie named Alison and became the frontman for the band Lincoln Hawk.

20 years later, Lily and Rufus found themselves both single again in their 40s. Lily’s husband Bart had died suddenly and she divorced Rufus’ wife Alison after discovering she had cheated on him. With their marriages over, Lily and Rufus reconnected and started dating again.

Lily and Rufus Have a Son Named Scott

Back when they were teenagers, Lily had become pregnant with Rufus’ child. Her strict parents forced her to give the baby boy up for adoption without even consulting Rufus.

It wasn’t until decades later that Rufus and Lily learned they had a son together named Scott Rosson. Scott was born in 1984 and had been adopted by a couple outside of New York.

When Scott came looking for his birth parents as an adult in his 20s, he soon established relationships with both Lily and Rufus. They were shocked but overjoyed to discover they had a son together from their youthful romance.

Scott’s Background

Not much is known about Scott’s adopted parents or his early childhood after being given up for adoption by Lily.

As a young adult, Scott enlisted in the military. He served a tour of duty in Iraq. After returning home, Scott decided to seek out his biological parents.

Through a private investigator, Scott was able to locate Lily van der Woodsen. The PI approached Lily pretending to be gathering information for an alumni directory. This allowed Scott to confirm Lily’s identity and that she had given a baby up for adoption.

Scott soon reached out to Lily directly and introduced himself as her son. While surprised, Lily quickly accepted Scott and he became close with both her and Rufus. They were able to develop strong parent-child bonds in adulthood.

Scott’s Personality and Interests

Scott is depicted as kind, respectful and mature beyond his years, likely as a result of his military service. He seems interested in getting to know his biological parents and building relationships with Lily and Rufus.

Not much else is known about Scott’s personal interests or hobbies. He doesn’t appear to have inherited the passion for music that his father Rufus has. Scott seems to be forging his own path in life.

Lily and Rufus’ Other Children

While Scott Rosson is Lily and Rufus’ only biological child together, they each have other children from past relationships:

Lily’s Children:

  • Serena van der Woodsen – daughter with William van der Woodsen
  • Eric van der Woodsen – son with William van der Woodsen
  • Chuck Bass – adopted stepson from her marriage to Bart Bass

Rufus’ Children:

  • Dan Humphrey – son with Alison Humphrey
  • Jenny Humphrey – daughter with Alison Humphrey

So while Scott is the only child Lily and Rufus had together, they each parented other children who became step-siblings. This blended family situation added some extra drama and intrigue to the Humphrey-van der Woodsen household.

Lily and Rufus’ Parenting of Scott

Lily and Rufus had to rapidly adjust to parenting their adult son Scott later in life. Here is how they approached getting to know him:

  • Were open and honest about the past – they explained the circumstances of why they gave him up for adoption as teens.
  • Let Scott set the pace – they didn’t push too hard and overwhelm him as he got to know them.
  • Included him in family events – Scott met his half-siblings and Lily and Rufus welcomed him into the family.
  • Supported him financially – Lily in particular wanted Scott to have access to opportunities he might have missed out on.

Despite the unusual situation, Lily and Rufus seemed to establish a caring relationship with their long lost son. Scott turned out to be a welcome addition to their complicated blended family.

Conclusion

Lily van der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey’s son is named Scott Rosson. Given up for adoption as a baby, Scott reconnected with his biological parents as an adult. He has gotten to know both Lily and Rufus, who had a second chance at parenting their child later in life. Scott added an interesting new dynamic to the Humphrey-van der Woodsen family on Gossip Girl.
