Who is Darkseid’s son?

Darkseid, the tyrannical ruler of the planet Apokolips, has one biological son named Kalibak. However, he has also considered some other beings as his “sons” at various points due to his role as their creator and master.

Kalibak

Kalibak is Darkseid’s first-born son with his wife Suli. He is a brutish warrior who serves as one of Darkseid’s lieutenants and regularly leads the parademons of Apokolips into battle. Some key facts about Kalibak:

  • Full Name: Kalibak of Apokolips
  • Species: New God
  • First Appearance: New Gods #1 (February 1971)
  • Powers: Superhuman strength, stamina, durability and healing factor

Kalibak resents that his younger brother Orion is Darkseid’s favorite son. The two brothers frequently clash both on the battlefield and in vying for their father’s approval. Kalibak is unquestionably loyal to Darkseid but also seeks greater power and conquests of his own.

Orion

Orion is Darkseid’s second son, whom he exchanged at birth with Highfather’s son Scott Free as part of a peace treaty between Apokolips and New Genesis. Orion became a hero of New Genesis and a champion against his father’s evil schemes. Some key facts about Orion:

  • Full Name: Orion of New Genesis
  • Species: New God
  • First Appearance: New Gods #1 (February 1971)
  • Powers: Superhuman strength, speed, durability, healing and harnessing the Astro Force

Though technically his son, Darkseid considers Orion a traitor and enemy. Orion frequently leads the armies of New Genesis against Apokolips and works with Earth’s heroes to thwart Darkseid’s plans of conquering the universe. He struggles against his innate dark urges which he inherited from Darkseid.

Mister Miracle

Mister Miracle’s real name is Scott Free, the biological son of Highfather exchanged as an infant for Orion. Though not related by blood, Darkseid considers Scott Free a son who betrayed him. Some key facts about Mister Miracle:

  • Full Name: Scott Free
  • Species: New God
  • First Appearance: Mister Miracle #1 (April 1971)
  • Powers: Escape artist, master stuntman and illusionist

After being raised in Granny Goodness’ orphanage on Apokolips, Scott Free escaped and fled to Earth where he became the superhero Mister Miracle. He is a frequent ally to Orion and often aids in defeating Darkseid’s schemes. His escape artist skills make him a formidable foe against Darkseid’s minions.

Grayven

Grayven is one of Darkseid’s innumerable sons sired with various women across the universe. He is a lesser known half-brother to Kalibak and Orion. Some key facts about Grayven:

  • Full Name: Grayven of Apokolips
  • Species: New God
  • First Appearance: Action Comics #779 (August 2001)
  • Powers: Superhuman strength, stamina and durability

Grayven hoped to gain his father Darkseid’s approval by defeating Superman, but was ultimately no match for the Man of Steel. He tends to be something of a minion to Kalibak and has been exiled from Apokolips at times when he falls out of Darkseid’s favor.

Other “Adopted” Sons

Though not his biological children, Darkseid has at times considered it fitting to refer to beings that he created or corrupted as his “sons”:

  • Doomsday – The creature that killed Superman was genetically engineered on Apokolips under Darkseid’s orders.
  • Batzarro – An imperfect, bizarre clone of Batman created through Darkseid’s experiments.
  • Match – A flawed clone of Superboy created from DNA acquired by Darkseid.
  • Agent Orange – The leader of the Orange Lantern Corps who harnessed the orange light of avarice after being corrupted by Darkseid.

Kalibak’s Story

As Darkseid’s first-born, Kalibak was bred to be a brutal warrior and commander of the Apokolips military. His upbringing was harsh, designed to make him cruel and merciless like his father. Kalibak’s early training came under the tutelage of the sadistic Granny Goodness and later he led elite shock troops to terrorize the citizens of Apokolips.

Once he reached adulthood, Kalibak regularly clashed with his hated younger brother Orion during raids on New Genesis. Their legendary battles laid waste to entire regions of both war-torn planets. At times they reluctantly joined forces when facing threats like Armagetto, Mantis, and Scott Free’s rebellion.

Kalibak secretly assembled an army of parademons loyal only to him in a bid to overthrow Darkseid and seize control of Apokolips. When this scheme was uncovered, Darkseid was enraged by his son’s treachery. As punishment, Kalibak was banished to the slave pits below Armagetto. He eventually won back his father’s favor after escaping and proving his loyalty in battle against New Genesis.

During Darkseid’s forays to Earth to conquer the planet, Kalibak frequently accompanies him or leads the vanguard of their army. The brute strength and fury of Kalibak makes him one of Darkseid’s most valuable warriors in these invasion attempts. However, his penchant for wanton destruction often works against strategic objectives.

Kalibak continues to dutifully serve Darkseid’s will despite their often strained relationship. He crushes all opposition with merciless force to live up to his fearsome reputation as Darkseid’s first-born son. The dynamic between them seems likely to persist until either gains an advantage through some act of cunning treachery or deceit.

Orion’s Story

The saga of Orion, Darkseid’s second son raised to be his mortal enemy, is defined by a conflicted legacy and destiny. As part of a peace treaty between Apokolips and New Genesis, Orion was traded at birth with Highfather’s biological son Scott Free.

On New Genesis under Highfather’s guidance, Orion was raised with discipline and morality to temper his innate ferocity inherited from Darkseid. But he struggled constantly against his darker urges and had to establish an outlet battling beings like Kalibak to unleash them.

When Orion slew one of his friends in a rage, Highfather exiled him to Supertown to learn self-restraint and atonement. There Orion honed his skills as a warrior while rejecting the evil path preordained for him as Darkseid’s son.

Orion became a respected general in New Genesis’s war efforts against Apokolips. In many epic battles he led armies or clashed directly with Kalibak in heated sibling rivalry. His prowess cemented his role as Apokolips’ most dreaded opponent.

Darkseid made repeated attempts to turn Orion towards evil or destroy him outright. At one stage he captured and tortured Orion by exposing him to toxins from the Omega realm. But Orion’s strength of spirit could not be broken. He later helped Earth’s heroes foil Darkseid’s plans to enslave humanity.

The “rage of the heavens” inherited by Orion makes him a most volatile and dangerous foe against Darkseid’s forces. Harnessing these primal energies for good represents Orion’s lifelong inner challenge. His complex backstory provides an emotional richness to the larger epic New Gods saga.

Mister Miracle’s Story

Scott Free began his life as the son of Highfather, ruler of New Genesis. But he was traded at birth with Darkseid’s son Orion and grew up in the nightmarish orphanages of Granny Goodness on Apokolips where his spirit was subjected to constant cruelties.

His one comfort was befriending the young Big Barda who suffered similar abuses. Together they rebelled and eventually escaped Apokolips through a boom tube to Earth. There Scott took on the name Mister Miracle and became the world’s greatest escape artist and stunt performer.

Though considered a traitor and enemy, Darkseid still regards Scott as a “son” lost to his rival Highfather. Darkseid sent many assassins to kill or recapture Mister Miracle over the years including Kanto, Virman Vundabar, and Steppenwolf.

During these battles, Mister Miracle regularly teamed up with allies like Superman, Orion, Big Barda and Oberon to defeat Darkseid’s forces. His daring acts of escape from lethal traps helped thwart his “father’s” plans time and again. But often Darkseid’s true sinister motivations were hidden.

Darkseid once kidnapped and tortured Mister Miracle to infect him with the Anti-Life Equation as part of a conspiracy to subjugate the Source. Scott resisted and ultimately channeled the Equation into Darkseid’s son Orion. This demonstrated the indomitable freedom and heroism still within Darkseid’s former “son”.

Now happily married to Big Barda on Earth, Mister Miracle remains ever vigilant against threats from Apokolips. And though free of Darkseid’s grip, the haunted memories of the tortures inflicted by his “father” still give him nightmares. His own struggles personify the universal war against oppression.

Other Son Legacies

Beyond his direct biological descendants and tortured New God “adoptees”, Darkseid’s legacy extends to various other beings he has created, corrupted or claimed as “sons”:

Doomsday

Doomsday was the result of an experiment on ancient Krypton engineered by Darkseid’s scientists to produce the ultimate living weapon. After countless deaths and rebirths, Doomsday gained enormous destructive power and lived only to kill.

Darkseid unleashed Doomsday on Superman, resulting in their legendary battle that claimed both their lives. Though defeated, Doomsday’s rampages cemented his reputation as one of Darkseid’s most infamous creations.

Batzarro

This malformed, bizarre clone of Batman was created in one of Darkseid’s genetics experiments. Batzarro possesses the original’s skills but lacks Bruce Wayne’s moral code and logical thought processes. His antics are often more of an annoyance than asset to Darkseid’s plans.

Match

Match is a flawed clone of Superboy derived from DNA stolen by Darkseid’s minions. While possessing comparable powers, Match lacks morality and restraint. Superboy narrowly prevented Darkseid from replicating the process to produce an army of clones.

Agent Orange

The alien Larfleeze became the embodiment of avarice after being corrupted by contact with the Orange Light of Okaara. Darkseid considers him a “son” as he trails yellow power rings across the universe like a conduit of greed at his command.

These strange heirs to Darkseid’s legacy reveal the dark desires and demented grandeur motivating him to impose his will upon existence itself. Through them, his warped corruption spreads like a plague.

Conclusion

Darkseid’s sons encompass a dysfunctional family tree ranging from biological descendants to unwilling adoptees to intentionally crafted heirs. Their origins and distorted relationships with their “father” shed light on the complex villainy of Darkseid.

Kalibak, Orion, Grayven and Mister Miracle represent Darkseid’s direct but strained offspring. His “adopted” sons like Doomsday and Batzarro are byproducts of cruel experiments. And across the cosmos, Darkseid has amassed legions of servants like Agent Orange seduced by promises of power.

This examination of Darkseid’s lineage reveals common themes of corruption, betrayal and rebellion. It mirrors the larger battles against his tyrannical reign. Darkseid casts a long shadow across his family tree and the multiverse itself. His sons both shape and are shaped by his legacy of evil in an ongoing, epic saga.
