What does not showing respect look like?

Respect is an important part of any relationship, whether personal or professional. Showing respect allows us to appreciate individual differences and uphold the dignity of other people. However, there are also many ways that a lack of respect can manifest in our words and actions.

Rudeness and Incivility

One of the most obvious signs of disrespect is rudeness. This can include:

  • Interrupting others
  • Talking over people
  • Ignoring what others are saying
  • Rolling eyes or other dismissive body language
  • Making snide or sarcastic remarks
  • Using condescending language

Rudeness stems from only caring about your own wants and needs in a situation, rather than considering how your words and actions affect others. It conveys a lack of concern for people’s feelings or perspectives.

Insensitivity and Lack of Empathy

Being insensitive or lacking empathy for others also demonstrates disrespect. Examples include:

  • Stereotyping groups of people
  • Making insensitive jokes or slurs
  • Sharing private information about others
  • Gossiping or spreading rumors
  • Judging or criticizing people quickly
  • Dismissing people’s concerns or perspectives

When we act in these insensitive ways, we convey that we don’t care about how others feel or what matters to them. We also make assumptions and fail to consider their situations more deeply.

Unfairness and Prejudice

Treating people in biased, discriminatory, or prejudiced ways also demonstrates disrespect. Examples include:

  • Making decisions based on preconceived notions rather than individual merit
  • Enforcing rules or policies in an arbitrary or inconsistent manner
  • Valuing certain groups’ needs over others
  • Making it harder for people to access opportunities due to their identities
  • Harassment or microaggressions

When we act with unfairness or prejudice, we convey that certain groups are less worthy of dignity, empathy, and consideration based on their identities. This profoundly disrespects people’s basic humanity.

Disregard for Others’ Time or Priorities

Disrespect also manifests in how we treat people’s time and priorities. Some examples include:

  • Being late to meetings or appointments without notice
  • Interrupting people’s work unnecessarily
  • Not responding to emails or requests in a timely manner
  • Talking excessively without regard for listeners’ time
  • Failing to prepare for engagements agreed upon

When we disregard others’ time and priorities, we convey that our own time and priorities are more valuable or important. Our lack of consideration makes it challenging to have mutually respectful relationships.

Dishonesty and Deception

Respect depends on honesty and integrity. Some examples of disrespectful dishonesty include:

  • Lying or misleading people intentionally
  • Withholding important information
  • Breaching confidentiality or sharing information without consent
  • Plagiarizing or failing to credit others’ work
  • Taking credit for others’ achievements
  • Covering up mistakes or unethical actions

When we are dishonest, we disrespect people’s right to the truth. We also undermine trust, which is foundational for respectful relationships.

Aggression, Threats, and Violence

Aggressive behavior represents a severe disrespect for people’s basic dignity and bodily integrity. Examples include:

  • Bullying or belittling
  • Verbal abuse like shouting or insults
  • Damaging people’s property
  • Making physical or verbal threats
  • Violence of any kind, including sexual harassment or assault

This kind of aggression intimidates, frightens, and violates people. It conveys extreme disregard for people’s well-being and the belief that such treatment is acceptable.

Conclusion

Failing to show respect takes many forms, both large and small. Though some are more overtly abusive than others, they all convey disregard and lack of care for people’s humanity. Promoting greater respect requires self-awareness, empathy, justice, integrity, and peacefulness in our words and actions.
