Peru The Lares Trek With G Adventures

The allure of the Inca Trail is undeniable, drawing thousands of tourists each year to its storied ruins perched high in the mountains. Yet, for those seeking an immersive experience that combines food, culture, history, and adventure without the crowds, the Lares Trek offers a tantalizing alternative. The path less traveled allows for a more intimate connection with Peru’s rich heritage, unencumbered by the throngs of selfie-photographers. Before the arrival of Columbus and Spanish explorers in the ‘new world,’ the Incan empire flourished in the southern Americas. Today, visitors can step into the heart of this once-mighty civilization in Peru, where a hidden treasure awaits those willing to venture off the beaten path. Beyond Machu Picchu’s iconic grandeur, the country conceals secrets and surprises for the curious traveler.

Traveling to Peru

My trip to Peru with G Adventures was an unforgettable experience that I wholeheartedly recommend. The company excels at offering budget-friendly, small-group tours, safaris, and expeditions that allow travelers to venture beyond their comfort zones. My journey, the Inca Discovery trek, took me to Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu with my partner Brendan, providing a unique blend of cultural immersion and adventure.

Lares Trek

Embark on an epic journey with the Lares Trek, a multi-day adventure that weaves its way through the majestic Andes and culminates at the ancient Incan Ruins. This trail is a haven for those seeking to escape the throngs of tourists and experience the thrill of ascending to breathtaking heights.

Lares Trek Altitude Tips

Upon arriving in Cusco, take some time to acclimate to the high elevation by spending a couple of days exploring the city before embarking on the Lares Trek. To stay hydrated and avoid any potential discomfort, make sure to drink plenty of water – but prioritize bottled or boiled water to minimize the risk of getting sick while hiking. If you’re feeling adventurous, try sipping on some coca tea or chewing on some coca leaves, which are widely available and have been used for centuries as a natural remedy for altitude sickness. Additionally, consider consulting with your doctor before the trip to obtain a prescription for Diamox, a medication that has proven effective in helping alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness.

The Camp

During our G Adventures trek, we were fortunate to stay at fantastic camp sites. Upon arrival, we found that the tents had already been set up by the crew. This was especially convenient given the altitude and the weight of our packs. To alleviate this issue, donkeys were utilized to carry a small bag for each person, containing only the essentials. This thoughtful touch allowed us to focus on the breathtaking scenery without the burden of heavy luggage.

The Food

The culinary delights on this trip were expertly prepared by the G Adventures crew, who ensured that every bite was not only delicious but also carefully tailored to accommodate my dietary restrictions. As someone with several food allergies, I was thrilled to have peace of mind knowing that my needs would be met without a hitch. The lack of cooking responsibilities was a true luxury, allowing me to simply relax and indulge in the hearty portions served family-style, leaving no one feeling left out or unsatisfied.

Day Two

Day two of the trek is a challenging but rewarding experience, with an 11 km trail leading up to a mountain pass at an astonishing altitude of over 4,500 meters. The thin atmosphere may be breathtaking, but it’s not the only thing that will leave you in awe – the panoramic views of snowy peaks, mountainside lagoons, and swirling clouds are simply stunning. As we hike, we’ll marvel at the alpacas grazing along the trail and take in the serene surroundings, surrounded by wildlife. Our guide will choose a campsite for the night, with many magnificent options to consider. The day begins with a 3 km climb to Yanaccha, followed by a break at beautiful lakes. From there, we’ll tackle another 2.5 km to the summit, where we’ll take a well-deserved break to soak in the views. The descent down 3 km to lunch is a welcome relief, and breaking up the day helps us adjust to the changes in altitude.Cell service may be spotty at times, but I was able to stay connected throughout the hike. A huge thank you to Brendan Williams for joining me on this trip and capturing the stunning scenery through his lens. After lunch, we’ll tackle just 4.5 km to reach the G Adventures campsite, where we can finally take off our boots and relax in the great outdoors.

Day Three

As day three unfolds, the gentle descent over 6 kilometers down a valley offers a welcome respite from the grueling uphill climbs of the previous legs. The terminus at Pumahuanca marks a transition from foot travel to wheeled transport, as a bus ride whisks you away to Agua Caliente – the launchpad for day four’s expedition to Machu Picchu itself. A well-deserved meal and night’s rest await in the town, accompanied by the anticipation of soon beholding one of the world’s greatest wonders. En route, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Incan ruins, a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage. The Lares Trek is an unforgettable experience, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone traveling to Peru. This guide is in collaboration with G Adventures and Peru Tourism, and I appreciate your support for destinations that support me.
