My Favourite Instagrammable spots in Portugal – In no Particular Order

Praia da Ursa
Just 30 minutes outside Sintra lies a breathtaking cliff and rock formation spectacle that’s sure to leave you awestruck. We timed our visit perfectly, arriving at sunrise to capture the serene beauty of this natural wonder. The hike down to the secluded beach takes mere 20 minutes, and we felt incredibly fortunate to have the entire stretch to ourselves – it was truly an Instagram-worthy moment! You won’t want to miss adding this gem to your list of must-see spots in Portugal.
Praia da Ursa may be small, but its unspoiled charm is nothing short of exotic. The name ‘Rocha da Ursa’ or bear rock refers to one of two giant sea stacks standing tall at the northern end of the beach. Quinta da Regaleria
Located in the charming town of Sintra, Portugal, the Quinta da Regaleira was a 20th-century residence that belied its modern origins with an ornate Gothic façade and a mysterious five-story structure. Azenhas do Mar
Just a 30-kilometer drive from Lisbon and mere minutes from Sintra, this picturesque town is a unique confluence of mountainous grandeur and oceanic majesty. The shores are flanked by an array of white houses with terra cotta roofs that double as Instagram-worthy backdrops. As a popular year-round destination, be prepared for some company when you visit, but the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean make it well worth the attention.
Miradouro de Santa Luzia
Standing atop this viewpoint, you’re treated to a serene atmosphere that’s reminiscent of the nearby Miradouro das Portas do Sol. The vista is identical, but the Jardim Julio de Castilho gardens create a peaceful ambiance that’s hard to find elsewhere. As you gaze out over the Tejo estuary, the tiled roofs and historic churches of Alfama unfold before your eyes. Among Lisbon’s many viewpoints, this one holds a special place in my heart. We visited at sunrise to capture its beauty on camera, and I highly recommend adding it to your list of Instagram-worthy spots in Portugal.
Pink Street
In Lisbon, no visit would be considered complete without a stroll along Pink Street. This vibrant street is surrounded by an explosion of colour, as if the buildings themselves are rejoicing in the city’s effervescent energy. And indeed, it’s here that Lisbon’s nightlife truly comes alive! The area, located on Rua Nova do Carvalho, underwent a remarkable transformation in 2011, when it was rebranded as Pink Street as part of a rehabilitation project aimed at revitalizing what was once Lisbon’s seedier Red Light district. Gone were the days of litter and neglect, replaced by trendy bars and an air of sophistication, transforming this once-forgotten corner into a must-visit destination.
Pracado Comercio
Perched on the edge of the Tagus estuary, Lisbon’s Pracado Comercio stands as a striking yellow monument, boasting the distinction of being the city’s largest plaza. This historic hub has long been the epicenter of commerce and finance, where merchants would peddle exotic goods and financiers would bankroll daring expeditions to far-flung corners of the world.
Today, this iconic square occupies the site once dominated by the Royal Palace – a structure that met its demise in 1755’s devastating earthquake. The palace’s destruction paved the way for Pracado Comercio’s rise, and its name ‘Commerce Square’ is a testament to its enduring significance as Lisbon’s main square.
Waterfront – Terreiro do Paco
Portugal’s stunning waterfront boasts its own Golden Gate Bridge equivalent, aptly named Lisbon’s Gateway. This expansive pedestrian haven is a treasure trove of Instagram-worthy moments, with its equestrian statue of King Dom Jose standing tall since surviving the devastating 1755 earthquake. While summer snaps are delightful, Lisbon’s reputation as one of Europe’s top winter city breaks ensures year-round allure.
Convent do Carmo
As we entered the church, I was struck by its grandeur. We arrived just as it opened, allowing us to explore without the crowds. The interior features beautifully displayed mirrors, perfect for capturing Instagram-worthy moments. This historic landmark is another must-visit spot in Lisbon, offering a unique blend of architecture and photography opportunities.
The church has a rich history dating back to 1389. Its resilience was tested during the devastating 1755 earthquake, although it did suffer significant damage. The roof remains torn apart to this day, serving as a poignant reminder of the disaster’s impact.
“Ler Devagar” Bookstore
In the world of Instagram, this bookstore stands out as a gem! Did you know that its roots date back to being a printing press? Today, it has transformed into one of the most breathtaking bookstores where readers can unwind and indulge in their favorite books. But what sets it apart is not just its stunning architecture, but also the diverse array of events and activities hosted within its walls. From concerts to exhibitions, there’s always something new to discover. For any book enthusiast, this store is a treasure trove, and as someone who shares a passion for literature, I can confidently say that it’s an absolute must-visit destination in Lisbon.
Cabo da Roca
Perched at the westernmost tip of mainland Portugal, continental Europe, and the Eurasian landmass, Cabo da Roca is an awe-inspiring destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty and architectural charm. The iconic lighthouse, situated 150 metres above the sea, is surrounded by dramatic cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. From this vantage point, you can take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the Serra de Sintra hills and the coastline below. It’s no wonder that Cabo da Roca has become one of Portugal’s most sought-after Instagrammable spots, drawing visitors from around the world with its dramatic scenery and unbeatable vistas.
Ponta da Piedade
A mere 3-hour drive from Lisbon lies a coastal gem that will leave you awestruck. The rugged beauty of this region is not to be missed, particularly the town of Lagos and its surrounding rock formations. A trip here would be an absolute must-do, as it’s truly breathtaking. For those seeking a more immersive experience, boat trips are available to take you up close and personal with the towering rock pillars that dot the coastline.
Praia do Camilo
Relaxation seekers will find this stunning beach to be their ultimate retreat. A tranquil oasis nestled near Lagos, this picturesque destination boasts 200 wooden steps leading down to a sheltered, sandy cove, beautifully divided by ochre-hued rocks. The secluded spot is well-loved by locals and visitors alike, offering a serene atmosphere that’s hard to resist. Comprising two small beaches connected by a unique cave hole tunnel, this enchanting location provides the perfect setting for unwinding and soaking up the sun.
Praia dos Estudantes
As we arrived at the Praia dos Estudantes beach just as the sun dipped below the horizon, it was clear that this coastal gem was well worth the 30-minute drive from Lagos. The picturesque sandy area is nestled among the dramatic rocky formations that plunge into the sea, creating a tranquil atmosphere perfect for swimming and soaking up the serene ambiance.
The beach is flanked by towering cliffs, but two tunnels provide accessible routes to explore. One tunnel leads to a stunning Roman arch, while the other connects Praia dos Estudantes to its neighbour, Praia da Batata beach.
Nature lovers will delight in the numerous caves and hidden coves scattered throughout the area, offering ample opportunities for Instagram-worthy moments in Portugal’s breathtaking coastal scenery.
Palacio da Pena
Portugal’s allure is often synonymous with the enchanting Pena Palace, a must-visit destination that embodies the country’s 19th-century romanticism. Located within the picturesque Sintra Hills, this architectural marvel was designed to be visible from any vantage point within its surrounding gardens. Be sure to plan your visit strategically, as open hours may vary depending on the season.
Castelo dos Mouros
Nestled within the lush forests of Serra De Sintra lies Moors Castle, a centuries-old stronghold built by North African Moors in the 9th century to safeguard Sintra from external threats. As the tides of history shifted, the castle fell into disrepair following the Christian conquest. However, its rich heritage was rediscovered in the 19th century when King Ferdinand II undertook a meticulous restoration, breathing new life into this architectural gem. Stepping foot within the castle’s walls, I couldn’t help but feel like royalty, transported to a bygone era of chivalry and romance.
